Most Suffolk County hamlets ask you to drive twenty minutes for anything worth doing on a Saturday. Brookhaven hamlet does not. Between the Carmans River estuary, a working boardwalk over Beaver Dam Creek, and a professional theater a mile down South Country Road, the whole day fits inside a five-mile radius. That compression is the thing worth noticing this summer. It is also the reason a lot of residents stop planning weekends and start improvising them.
