For years, a Saturday in Bellport Village meant a good morning at Mother's Beach, a stroll down Bellport Lane, and then a drive out for anything past the basics. The summer of 2026 is the first in recent memory where the whole day, from morning coffee to a proper dinner, can happen inside the walking village.
Two openings did most of the work. A specialty food market took the corner that used to be a gallery. A French bistro took the building that used to be a brewery. Together they closed a gap that had been widening since the last IGA left.
The two rooms that changed the map
Off the Wheel opened at 139 South Country Road in late June 2026. Jennifer and Collin Preziosi, a husband-and-wife team who grew up in the village, spent the winter and spring rebuilding a longtime gallery and former bookstore into an Italian specialty market. Inside, shoppers will find about 15 varieties of cured meats and roughly 40 cheeses, many imported from Italy and elsewhere in Europe. The market runs Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
The context matters more than the inventory. The market also arrives at a time when many Bellport residents have been looking for more convenient grocery and specialty food options following the closure of two separate and longtime IGA grocer locations in the village in (somewhat) recent years. For anyone who has been driving to Patchogue for a wedge of parmesan, that math has changed.
Around the corner and one block north, La Plage Bistro has settled into 14 Station Road. The address itself is a small piece of village history. Building owner Frank Trotta confirmed the news noting the building was originally built by his father for use as a post office and known for years as the Meritage restaurant. The brewery closed shortly after the death of one of the owners Brian Baker in 2022. Chef Wayne Wadington, who has run the original La Plage in Wading River for three decades, brought a French-American bistro concept south. The bistro menu includes favorites like steak frites, coq au vin, and beef bourguignon.
A Saturday routed through both
Once you accept that the food problem is solved, the day rearranges itself. Here is a version that uses only what is inside the village line:
- Morning coffee and a walk down Bellport Lane toward the Marina, where the sailboat races and the refurbished playground are in season use.
- Late morning stop at Off the Wheel for the week's cheese and something cured for later. Wednesday-through-Sunday hours make the timing forgiving.
- Ferry to Ho-Hum on the 47-passenger Whalehouse Point, which runs 7 days a week, weather permitting during the peak weeks of summer.
- Back to the mainland by late afternoon, a shower, then a matinee or evening show at Gateway on South Country Road.
- Dinner at La Plage Bistro on Station Road or one of the anchor rooms below.
- Concert night on Bellport Lane at the bandshell, chairs and a blanket, stars over the Great South Bay.
The point is not the itinerary. The point is that every stop above is inside the 1.4 square miles the village measures.
What is on at Gateway this summer
The Gateway sits at 215 South Country Road and has been the village's cultural anchor for over seven decades. Two productions define the summer calendar. Ain't Too Proud at The Gateway Playhouse runs June 19, 2026 to July 19, 2026. Follow the journey of five young men from Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as they face the personal costs of The Temptations' incredible success. The second slot is a heavier one. Come From Away at The Gateway Playhouse runs August 7, 2026 to September 6, 2026. On September 11, 2001, a small town in Gander, Newfoundland, opens its doors to 7,000 stranded passengers after U.S. airspace abruptly closes.
Two touring-scale Broadway titles inside walking distance of the marina is unusual for a South Shore village this size. It is also the reason a Saturday plan built around Bellport Village does not have to lean on a car past 6 p.m.
The ferry, the bandshell, and the two beaches
The Whalehouse Point ferry is the piece of village infrastructure that non-residents ask about most. It is a resident-and-guest system. The Village of Bellport operates a 47 passenger ferry, including ferry staff, named the Whalehouse Point, between the Village Marina and the Village beach on Fire Island from May through September. The ferry runs on weekends from Memorial Day weekend until school lets out in June then begins running daily through Labor Day. 2026 Season Beach passes will be available for purchase at Village Hall on May 4, 2026.
The mayor's own summary of why residents value the compact geography sits alongside all of this:
"Where can you find so many wonderful amenities in one little tight box of a village… you have a park for children, you have a beach at Mother's Beach, you have a golf course, you have tennis, and I literally go everywhere on my bike all summer long."
For families who prefer bay water to ocean water, Mother's Beach remains the closer option. The Bellport Village Marina is busy all year round. During the warmer months, sailboat races happen every week and residents gather to socialize while children play on the newly refurbished playground. When the bay freezes solid during the colder months, hockey games, skating and sledding are just a few of the numerous activities happening while ice scooters race across the bay as fast at the wind will carry them. The Marina offers a spectacular view of the Great South Bay and Fire Island. It is surrounded by lush park grounds, a playground and a band shell.
The bandshell schedule is what most residents actually plan around. The 2026 concert series runs through the summer on weekday evenings at 7 p.m., following the model of the prior year's lineup of tribute and roots acts. Bring a chair.
The anchor rooms that were already here

The marina walk becomes a Wednesday habit. The Friday reservation gets easier to make. Guests come out for a weekend and never need the car after Route 27.
